ANALYSIS OF ANOTHER STUDENT'S MUSIC VIDEO TO GAIN INSPIRATION

One aspect of the music that I think is really good about this music video is its simplicity. There is a narrative and a performance to follow and the difference is shown through the different settings. The studio represents the narrative and the dancing in the streets represents the performance. The performance was energetic, vibrant and perfectly encapsulated the mood of the song.

The narrative is about a lonely girl, who has had her heart broken and is bitter towards couples in love. To juxtapose this there is a couple who is in love and this is represented by their in synch dancing. The music video cuts between the studio and the performance through a lot of close ups and well lit to create a dark mood which juxtaposes with a light mood of the loved up couple.

The genre of this music video is electro-folk-pop. The pop aspect is represented through the dancing and bright lights used. The electro aspect is represented through the choreographed dance scene by the South bank as it gives it an urban feel. The folk aspect is represented through the dark scenes in the studio.

The image of the singer is quite dark and indie and reminds of the singer Lorde. This is reflected through the medium close ups of her face, showing her as being emotionless. Furthermore the dancers are sold through their ability to comprehend the movement and reflect the emotion of the song, which the lonely girl is unable to do.

I thought the use of location was excellent and it has inspired me. I like the simplicity of the narrative and I liked the juxtaposition of the studio and the performance element and the way they combined them to help sell the artist's star image of loneliness and desperation.
